Dr. Nair was felicitated as part of the launch of the 2015 Malayalam edition of the Limca Book of Records today at the Gateway Hotel, Ernakulum. The Record Book was launched by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri. Oommen Chandy.

This new edition is a Special on Literature. For ages, the written word has been at the cornerstone of shaping society and culture and Limca Book of Records, this year, is recognizing the contribution of Indian Literature by dedicating its 2015 edition to this field. Dr. Nair was chosen as the “People of the Year 2015” along with some other stalwarts of Indian literature who have contributed to the field, over the last 75 years.

Present at the launch was the Limca Book of Records (LBR) Editor, Ms. Vijaya Ghose and her senior editorial team.

The launch event commenced with a special welcome of the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Oommen Chandy and Dr. MT Vasudevan Nair through a Thayambaka (chenda recital) performance by Limca Book of Record-holders Harish Parameswaran and his wife Dr. Nandini Varma. The couple has been performing together on stage for around two years and hold the Limca Book of Records for being the first couple to perform thayambaka (chenda recital) together.

The event also included a special tribute to Dr. MT Vasudevan Nair which was marked by an entertaining performance by cast members of Cinemala, who enacted famous scenes from Dr MT Vasudevan Nair’s iconic scripts. Cinemala, a weekly political satire programme in Malayalam, has been telecast for the past 20 years since August 30, 1993 without a break on Asianet channel (worldwide). On July 31, 2013, it celebrated the 1000th episode and the event was aired from 7.00 pm to 11.30 pm on August 31, 2013. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy graced the 1000th episode celebrations, a testimony of the popularity of the show. Diana Silvester has been the Chief Producer and Director of the show from the beginning.

Another high point of the event included unveiling of the life size autobiographical portrait of Dr. MT Vasudevan Nair created by Limca Book of Record Holder, Manu Kallikad of Malappuram district, Kerala. Measuring 100 cm x 125 cm, the portrait made an entry into the Limca Book of Records for being the largest autobiographical portrait.

Other than literature, LBR 2015 also includes 19 informative chapters on arts, cinema, sports, adventure, science, medicine etc. Launched in India in 1990, it is the second book of records in the world after Guinness Book of World Records. It was launched with the objective of providing a platform to ordinary Indians to showcase their talent in their search for excellence. From then on, there has been no looking back. Today, the book has become a ready-reckoner for those who intend to break limits.

Vijaya Ghose, the long serving editor of Limca Book of Records, said “It’s been a privilege to have edited a book that is not just a catalogue of extraordinary feats but also a part of many lives. I have known of people whose lives have been shaped or re-shaped by them getting a mention in the Record book. It has been a catalyst of creativity, courage and collaboration and I hope that people continue to shower all their love on the team and the Record book, like they have always done”.

The launch of the record book was followed by a special panel discussion based on the topic “‘Is the `commerce’ of Literature today killing `good’ writing?’“. The panel included Dr MT Vasudevan Nair, Ravi Deecee, Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of D C Books, Mr. TR Gopalakrishnan, Editor-in-charge at The Week magazine and Byju Menachery, Unit Manager (Editorial), Kalakaumudi.
