Coca-Cola India is working on a transitional journey to create a virtuous Circular Economy of sustainable agriculture (horticulture) by using a variety Indian fruits in its beverages under juice and aerated drinks categories. Multiple interventions are being made across the value chain starting from the farm-gate.
India is the second largest producer of fruits & vegetables in the world yet unfortunately a very meagre percentage of India’s fruits get processed as a result as suggested by various estimates, a large percentage of our fruits perish. This is a national challenge where, Coca-Cola is uniquely positioned to make a difference, given the size and strengths of its System wide operations. The Coca-Cola India system is already one of the largest institutional buyers of agriculture produce in India with over 95% of its ingredients sourced locally and exports to the Coca-Cola operations amounting to over Rs. 1,700 Crs.
The Circular Economy initiative is to create a virtuous economic cycle which will have a transformative impact on Indian agriculture especially horticulture. This initiative will create a spurt in the company’s local procurement of fruit and farm level interventions will have a positive impact on the Indian horticulture ecosystem. The launch of Minute maid Pulpy Mosambi marks the beginning of this transformational journey towards creating a sustainable Circular Economy with Indian fruits. More than 1,800 MT of the mosambi fruit has already been sourced from Jalna in Maharashtra for the first phase of the Minute Maid Pulpy Mosambi production.
Coca-Cola India has always been committed towards the cause of empowering farmers and along with its partner eco-system has undertaken numerous initiatives which seek to make a positive impact on the lives of the farmer community in the country. Key amongst them has been project “Unnati” where the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages and Jain Irrigation help mango farmers grow and then process high quality mango produce for use in Maaza and Minute Maid range of juice products. Following the successful implementation of this project, the Company, in February 2016, signed an agreement with the Government of Maharashtra, together with Jain Irrigation to extend Project Unnati in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra for pulping and processing of fruit produce from the state, the end-produce of which will be used by Coca-Cola in its product offerings.
