 Mighty Jets, one of the oldest Indian transport squadrons, has a number of firsts to its credit. Raised in Chandigarh with AN-12 aircraft on March 31, 1961, it won Battle Honours for offensive operations during bombing missions, generally work that is left to fighter jets. It was awarded the president’s Standard in March 2011, the first transport squadron thus honours. It is the only IL-76 Squadron in the IAF. It is the only Indian unit to circumnavigate the world. Its aircraft have flown over the North Pole. It boasts of the first woman multi-engine jet pilot, Sqn Ldr Veena Saharan.
