Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba inaugurated the new Naval Air Enclave on Oct 5, 2016. The enclave will help the new Boeing P8I aircraft and enhance surveillance around the western coast and the Lakshdweep and Minicoy Islands. Neighbouring friendly countries will also benefit from prompt help, if required. The naval air enclave will operate aircraft that cannot be operated from INS Garuda because of its shorter runway length and the presence of birds in the highly populated area.
