Under the auspices of Headquarters, Integrated Defence Staff (HQIDS), a team of ten members from the tri-services (Indian Army, Navy and Air Force), led by Wing Commander Paramvir Singh, successfully undertook the ‘Ganga Avahan Expedition 2015’, a 2,800 km long swimming-cum-rafting expedition covering the entire length of Ganga, starting from Devprayag, Uttarakhand on Oct 8, 2015 and culminating at Frazer Ganj, West Bengal on Nov 19, 2015. First such expedition on Ganga, it had three swimmers covering the distance in relay format, accompanied by others in a manual raft. They swam during the day and camped at night by the riverside.The 43-day event promoted the Swachh Bharat Mission and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao movement.
The swimmers included Wg Cdr Paramvir Singh (team leader), Sergeant Gullupili Narhari and Sergeant Saripilli Srihari while the rafting team comprised Flight Lieutenant Manoj Kumar, Sergeant Arun Singh Naruka, Sergeant T P Anil Kumar, Havildar Ashok Kumar, Naik Virendra Kumar Singh, Leading Seaman Bikesh Kumar and Leading Aircraftsman Amrendra Vats in addition to the three swimmers who rafted as well.
