Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country introduced ‘Compassionate Citizen’, a humane education programme designed to teach compassion towards animals to 8 – 12 year old children in a May 2016 notification. Prepared by animal rights advocacy group People for Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA), it was integrated into the official curriculum via languages, social sciences, environmental and value education curricula. The course has been endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
