The Navy got the Boeing P-8I, short for Poseidon Eight India, a long range maritime patrol aircraft on Nov 13, 2015. The aircraft that gives the Navy capability for extensive surveillance can now respond more swiftly to contingencies. The P-8 aircraft participated in the search effort for Malaysian Airlines Flight MH 370. India is the first nation outside the United States of America to buy the P-8, each of eight aircraft costing US$ 2.1 billion.
Equipped for long range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance it is based at INS Rajali under Indian Naval Air Squadron 312A. Its first Commander is Venkateshwaran Ranganathan.
