The Navy commissioned INS Astradharini, the first indigenous torpedo launch-and-recovery vessel, at Visakhapatnam naval base on Oct 9, 2015. The vessel designed by the Naval Science and Technology Laboratory, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Shoft Shipyard near Mumbai, has a catamaran hull that reduces the 50 m vessel’s power requirements. It can thus cruise at 15 knots and carry a crew of 29 including two officers. It can also carry 13 scientists since it will carry out technical trials of underwater weaponry. The large deck area has torpedo launchers. INS Astradharini replaces INS Astravahini, decommissioned in July 2015.
