INS Satavahana has three schools with submarine training, escape training and the school of advanced undersea warfare. In 2015, the Navy began training its largest batch of submariners in Visakhapatnam. This is the 88th batch for the year-long basic course for young sailors, whose average age is 25 years. It has 45 officers and 176 sailors. Every year, two batches are trained. The first six months are spent on land and the next six, on board an operational submarine. Officers have to train for a further six months to earn the dolphin badge. All students volunteer. On a submarine, no one wears a uniform.
