All our units across the country are actively involved in citizenship activities which are in line with the local needs of the communities. For instance in Varanasi the unit partnered with the local NGOs and village communities to augment the water resources and facilitate better availability of potable water by repairing & cleaning the community wells, supporting digging of bore wells & installation of hand pumps. Similarly in Wada, Maharashtra the unit supplied potable drinking water during dry season.

Catching Water where it Falls

Shiela DikshitIn India, Coca-Cola is partnering with Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA), local governments and communities to help combat water scarcity and depleting groundwater tables. Local government officials and NGOs identify critical areas, and then Coca-Cola sets up rainwater harvesting partnerships with local resident welfare associations or communities in these areas to collect and recharge the ground water tables.

NGO specialists execute the project and mobilize community participation, while Coca-Cola facilitates the overall project and serves as the main funding arm. The partnership with CGWA ensures availability of technical expertise. Coca-Cola employees also play an active role, helping with project coordination, selection of vendors, execution and maintenance.

Ground Water The potential of rainwater harvesting is enormous. Local communities involved in the project are now better aware of the needs of conservation and the benefits of ground water recharging. And the project is designed in a way that requires minimum recurring expenses and involves community residents right from the start—ensuring local ownership of the project.

Rainwater Harvesting ProjectsCoca-Cola has also initiated implementation of rooftop rainwater harvesting projects at all of its bottling plants, saving millions of liters of water a year at each plant. Additionally, Coca-Cola shares its water management expertise with communities surrounding each of its plants, helping them to develop localized rainwater harvesting programs.

In April 2003, the Government of Delhi honored Coca-Cola India with a special citation recognizing the company’s active participation in the State Government's Bhagidari (partnership) program to implement rainwater harvesting and solid waste management initiatives in various parts of Delhi.

After dedicating the Sarai Bawari to the community, Prof. Sanwar Mal Jat, Hon’ble Minister said, “I am glad that Coca-Cola has come forward to take up social projects, which help society at large. In the light of increased pressure on our water resources, the rejuvenation of conventional water bodies attains greater importance. I thank Coca-Cola for their exemplary work. On the behalf of the state government, I promise to extend all co-operation to Coca-Cola in all such future endeavours”. Hon’ble Minister also expressed hope that the villagers will take active interest in the upkeep of the rejuvenated Sarai Bawari. While Jaipur Municipal Corporation helped the team at every stage of the rejuvenation process, Rajasthan Ground Water Department provided the technical guidance. The rejuvenated Sarai Bawari would help arrest the fall in ground water table and ensure water sustainability to thousands of local villagers deprived of any other source of water.

Earlier the company has worked with the community in several areas of Rajasthan including rainwater harvesting, support to education and youth development, upgrading medical facilities by renovating women hospital, General hospital and veterinary hospital of Kaladera village.

Government of Rajasthan invites Division President to head work group on Water Conservation

The Chief Minister of desert State Rajasthan, Ms. Vasundhara Raje, invited Mr. Sanjiv Gupta, President, India Division, to chair the Government's Working Group on Water Sector in recognition of Coca-Cola India's pioneering water conservation work in the State.

In addition to this position, the State Government has also invited Mr. Gupta to join another select group to develop a strategy for water conservation.

The Company has over the last few years initiated a large number of rainwater harvesting projects in partnership with local NGOs and the Rajasthan State Ground Water Department. The rain water harvesting initiatives, both near the Company's bottling plants and in other areas, have created a potential to recharge more water than what is drawn from the ground. These efforts have been appreciated by the local communities and recognized by the Government earlier as well.

This Government initiative is a strong reflection of the increasingly important role that the Company is playing in improving the lives of local communities and bringing joy to their lives.

Coca-Cola India on Monday 17th May ’04 dedicated two rainwater-harvesting projects to the people of Kaladera village, work for which commenced on the auspicious World Water Day (22nd March '04) in Jaipur district where the company has its bottling plant.

The company constructed rainwater harvesting structures at Government Girls School and Government Degree College Kaladera with an approximate storage capacity of three lakh litres and a ground recharge potential of an additional five lakh litres.

Three structures were constructed within two months with the technical assistance of the State Ground Water Board.

US Salodia, IAS, while handing over the project to people said that there was definite need for conserving our natural resources and such initiatives will surely benefit the local communities.

This scientific method for recharging of aquifers is the need of the hour and it is important to take action to ensure sustainable development, said an official of the State Ground Water Department.

The two projects are completed well before the monsoon with the aim to catch the water wherever it falls. It’s a small initiative but it would inspire others to take up similar projects for water conservation.

On the lines of Coca-Cola to protect, preserve and enhance the environment, seven other industries would be constructing rain-water harvesting projects within their premises in RIICO Industrial area.

The company also announced other rehabilitation grants for unemployed enterprising ladies and for repairing of damaged and broken roads.

Rain Water Harvesting in Thar Desert Area with Jal Bhagirathi Foundation

In water starved Rajasthan, CCI is working with Jal Bhagirathi Foundation, to set up a series of rainwater harvesting projects around the Thar Desert to substantially improve the availability of drinking water in the region. The unique feature of the project is that the poor but highly enthusiatic local community contributed 25% of the cost through voluntary donation of labour and we supported the project with the balance 75%.

The resultant - nearly one lakh villagers in seven districts around Thar desert have drinking water around the year.
