In the country’s Metros, Coca-Cola has launched several projects to protect the environment –PET recycling projects, several solid waste management projects have been put in place in association with the Resident Welfare Associations and the city government. Coca-Cola India launched a PET Bottle Recycling project at all the eight bottling plants in the East Region in partnership with the respective State Pollution Control Boards (PCB’s) and the Indian Association of PET Manufacturers (IAPM).
The project entails setting up a PET bottle collection and recycling chain by engaging the services of rag-pickers. The rag-pickers collect the used PET bottles from various public places such as railway stations, bus stops, picnic and tourist spots, offices, shopping malls etc. and sell it to the Collection Centers. The Collection Centers remove the label, segregate white from green bottles. From these Collection Centers, the PET bottles go to the Compacting Centre where the bottles are also sorted and compacted into bales. Finally, the bottles are converted into PET flakes which are sold as raw material to the PET Recyclers. The Company has not only helped to establish the Collection Centers in key cities but is also disseminating the information through advertisements in newspaper, FM Radio channels and advertisements on truck backs, running awareness program in schools, painting dustbins and providing collecting bins. The programme is getting the desired results as nearly 60 per cent of the PET bottles are already getting recycled in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal and the Company’s efforts have also been appreciated by the State Pollution Control Board. While the projects have already been implemented in the territories of the Bhubaneshwar, Dankuni, and Taratola plants, the process is gaining momentum in Jamshedpur, Patna, Guwahati, Siliguri and Jorhat areas
