Coca-Cola Celebrates World Environment Day, Dedicates Rain Water Recharging Project to Seven Schools in Koppal, Karnataka

Commemorating the wprld Environment Day, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited in partnership with the NGO, Sarvodaya Integrated Rural Development Society (SIRDS) announced the completion of work on a Rainwater Recharge Project (RWR) at Hirebagnal School, Koppal, Karnataka.

The project was dedicated to the community by the Chief Guest Shyam Sundar, BEO. Also, present at the dedication function were, Sridhar, Member of Pollution Control Board, Muththappa, Geologist, Mines and Geology Department, Kalavathi Subanna, Member Zilla Panchayat, Bharath Kumar, Member Talluk Panchayath, Krishnamurthy, Area Operation Director, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd, Nagaraj Desai, President, Sarvodaya Integrated Rural Development Society (SIRDS) and the students and teachers of the school.

The project implemented in seven schools in Koppal will benefit nearly 2000 children, besides the communities around these schools. As part of the project Coca-Cola has turned Hirebagnal's Higher Primary School as a model school which now has safe play area for children, kitchen garden with fresh vegetables and fruits, first-aid kits and a healthy environment to study and play.

To mark World Environment Day and create awareness about the importance of environment protection and preservation, a special painting workshop was also organized for children on various environment related themes.

Speaking at the occasion, Shyam Sundar, BEO said "Fresh water is a global challenge and needs the urgent attention. Rain Water Recharging has emerged as a viable option to redirect rainwater into the ground, which otherwise goes waste and we need to persuade more people and society at large to take up RWR projects. I hope that we see more such examples of private-public partnership in the area of water conservation and recharging ground water. I congratulate the principal partners in these projects specially SIRDS &Coca-Cola."

According to Mr. Nagaraj Desai, President, Sarvodaya Integrated Rural Development Society (SIRDS), "Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd. has been an active participant in commissioning as well as educating people about the benefits of ground water recharge through Rain Water Harvesting. The company's involvements in the launch of the latest RWH units in Koppal are a testament of the same commitment. I would like to thank Coca-Cola for helping and providing us all the necessary information in completing this project and we would look forward in involving in such more initiatives in the coming time."

Over the years Coca-Cola India has been involved in rainwater harvesting projects to protect, preserve and enhance the environment. In the Capital, the Company has initiated a large number of rainwater harvesting projects in partnership with local NGOs and State Ground Water Departments. Over the years Coca-Cola and its bottling partners have been involved in rainwater harvesting projects to protect, preserve and enhance the environment.
