Coca-Cola Takes Lead In Clean Energy Industry Initiative

As Indian economy expands, the demand for clean, sustainable energy is also expected to grow over the years. Thus it has become imperative to invest in innovative clean-energy technologies to ensure a reliable and secure source of renewable energy in the country.

Taking the lead in addressing this issue, Atul Singh, India BU President, who also heads the Environment Committee of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) chaired an interactive session on “Clean Energy and Environment Sector” in New Delhi recently.

Other eminent members who spoke during the session included David Bohigan, Assistant Secretary, US Department of Commerce, Carmine D’Aloisio, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs, Embassy of USA in India, D D Verma, Principal Secretary (transport) - Government of Uttar Pradesh and Chairman UP Road Transport Corporation and Mr Raghuraman, Principal Advisor & Chief Coordinator, CII.

"Among the many challenges on the environment that we face today is the challenge of global warming and increasing carbon footprint", said Atul Singh. He further added, "With the Indian economy growing at 8% and with a population base second only to China, industrial growth is a given. Clean energy technologies are therefore the need of the hour."

In his address, Atul also stressed upon the importance of sustainable growth. He also said that there is a need for the industry and business to put proactive and preventive strategies to demonstrate corporate citizenship.

Sharing his thoughts on clean energy and innovative technology, Atul gave an example of how Coca-Cola in India has worked on a complete value chain from collectors to recyclers to recycle PET in India.

David Bohigian, Assistant Secretary, US Department of Commerce expressed his desire to participate with India with respect to technology transfer and also in the fields of education, energy and other related fields. He also appreciated the efforts of Coca-Cola in providing stewardship in the area of energy conservation. He expressed his gratitude to Atul for promoting the theme of  "Clean Energy and Environment sector".
